For years coffee has been consumed as a ” pick me up”…a get me started in the morning drink!. For some cultures, it was the ” drink of the Gods”.
Starbucks, to my surprise turned America into a ‘ cult of coffee drinkers“. Now, Coffee offerings are on every corner.
Now, in the last several years, and most recently, Studies are showing some enligtening potentials for the chemistry of coffee, and it benefits to our personal health.
This is in stark reality to the Caffeine warnings of the past, and over a century of religious opposition to this current ” stimulant of choice”.
What are the Facts here.
You may not be aware that one of the most recent medical discoveries( just half century old) turns out to be that your body has an IMMUNE SYSTEM. iMMUNOLOGY WAS BORN!. Science took a new look at what enables some bodies to be resistent to cerrtain maladies, and disorders, while others succumbed.
So, today, we are hearing in the news, the discoveries of Science,. Unfortunately , in many cases , only half truths have been penned by clever press agents representing the industry benefiting from the so called research. In most cases, they are justing reporting…never checking the sources.
The Press is selling papers ( most print news is in serious financial trouble) sponsored by an industry looking to make a profit from the hype being given to the press. They rarely check out the substance of the claims, just promote them as if they are ultimate truth. Naive folks believe what they read..so it goes..
The latest kick on Coffee, is that is contains more anti-oxidants than blueberries, oranges. That it exceeds TEA #2, and Chocolate #3 in ANTIOXIDANT POWER.
This body’s disease spurning power is compliments of hundreds of polyphenols which inhibit cellular damage, and relieve inflammation ( two major causes of disease) .
American Journal of Clinical Nutrition ( Feb 2007) found, that (4 servings of caffeine) reduced risk of CHD (coronary Artery Disease) than small dose consumers. Further the Archives of International Medicine ( Aug 2006) in a 10 year study confirmed 4X more decline in memory loss with abstainers than those consuming (3 cups of Joe a day) .
The antioxidant power reduced Brain Damage. Likewise, females seemed to benefit from less Gall Stones with up to (4 cup) a day habit, but getting ( 5 or above) could cause bone fracture.
Getting into a fine line here, aren’t we! Guess, this is sorta supporting the ” moderation theory” of life, and exposing potentially the exclusionary rule often promoted by cultic type eating patterns.
So, Coffee is IN…and STARBUCKs has won a round of scientific followers. They already made it with the social , and cultic crowds.
Is there anything else, that need to be considered in the Coffee equation?
The caveat is that the impact of Caffeine can raise BLOOD PRESSURE. Some folks are apparently allergic, and the impact can give one the ” jitters”…causing hyper activity. It can also inhibit sleep.
There appears to be reasonable cause to consider coffee, and Tea in one daily regiment. Coffee possesses more polyphenols, and Tea contains more Catechins( not in coffee) which have cancer fighting instincts.
So just maybe, a good social habit might be Coffee in the morning, and Tea in the mid-morning and afternoon. We will report on the exciting benefits of TEA in another article to be published soon.
So contrary to the naysayers, Coffee may have been given a bum rap, by religious zealots, and uniformed health advisors.
My additional studies confirm the how to of getting the greatest health impact out of the Coffee. Here is my health tip.
As in Vegetables, Fresh is best, Frozen is good, and ” canned” is for preserving product , but not sustaining nutrient value.
I have discovered, that for maximum nutrient value, one’s needs to roast their own coffee beans. This is as simple as ‘ popping corn’. The taste will tell the difference. Never a bitter cup, with a quality , fresh berry, and you will experience another side of the smells of coffee along with its reall benefits.
It appears that ‘ green coffee beans” have a long shelf life when properly stored. Roasted coffee, has a maximum nutrient/flavor benefit after roasting of about five days. Nothing like roasting your coffee, the night before, and drinking in the benefits the next morning. I formerly thought freezing coffee would preserve it..but not so, the experts say. Too much moisture…an enemy of flavor and quality. The pros say it best to let the fresh roast rest for at 18 hours.
it is almost like FAST FOOD, while preserving the value of the substance, rather than just doing something for the habit of it. This is the bitter free coffee way of life! Roast it and brew it. All complete in ten minutes.
